Captain Charles "Sully" Sullenberger and Copilot Jeff Sklies set off on a flight
from the LaGuardia Airport to the Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
Only about
three minutes into the flight and only 2,800 feet off the ground, the
airplane collides
with a flock of geese, disabling both the left and right engines.
In the heat of the
moment, Captain Sully judges that the best descision would be
to perform a forced water
landing on the Hudson River. He manages to safely
land the plane with no casualties and
is instantly deemed a hero.
But Captain Sullenberger does not feel like a hero. The emergency landing left
him with PTSD;
he kept having dreams about different scenarios involving the
crash, such as imagining the
plane crashing into a building. Soon after his noteworthy
landing, Captain Sully is accused of
making the wrong descision. People who
perform certain simulations of the situation claim that
Sully had enough time to
make it back to either of the two closest airports. However, Sully argues
otherwise,
saying that the simulations did not incorporate the "human factor", or amount of
time
it takes to process an unexpected, stressful event. After further consideration,
it is announced
that Captain Sullenberger did in fact make the right decision and that
his accusers were incorrect.
The final scene is a reporter asking Copilot Skiles if he
would have done anything differently; he replies, "I would have done it in July."
I thought the movie was thrilling yet meaningful- a perfect mix of action and
drama. Tom Hanks was the
perfect actor to portay the real Chelsey
Sullenberger; he was brave and
stoical yet warm and somewhat naive.
Each scene left me on the edge of
my seat, waiting anxiously to see
what would happen next. Clint Eastwood
truly delivered with this
movie- it is a must see!
